A little bit about us – your Profile Wingman (ok, technically we’re Wingwomen, but it just doesn’t have the same ring to it).
Match.com, eHarmony, Chemistry.com, yes, we have done them all – and more! Like you, we have spent time looking for love and have labored countless hours working on our profiles, reading about perspective matches, and taking the leap to meet true love. And probably, like you, we found it so hard to write about ourselves. My mother’s voice is still in my head, don’t brag about yourself, let others do the talking for you. Well, sorry to my Mom, but writing an online profile forces you to go against her advice. How do you write a profile that brings out the best parts of you without sounding so inauthentic? How do you tell someone about how wonderful you are with any sort of humility? Well, we realized we weren’t the only ones who had this problem.
A little while ago a very good friend approached us and asked us to look at his Match.com profile. He is an attorney with a Ph.D and is a professor at a major Midwestern university – basically, a pretty smart guy. However, he had no idea how to write about himself. We sat with him and worked on his profile and that’s when it hit us, like Cupid’s arrow (sorry I just couldn’t help myself!), he wasn’t the only one who had this problem. And, even better, we realized after our experience with online dating, we could really help.
So we set out to hone our online profile writing skills by looking at the most popular sites and submitting our profiles. We sifted through a bunch of articles by other experts, and finally built our own set of “best practices.” With our team, we have put these “best practices” to the test (disclaimer: no innocent online daters were harmed during our research), and have identified some great ways to make your online profile stand out, and most importantly, ensure your profile highlights the TRUE YOU.
